calzone chronicles

halfway point: out with the old
we’re already halfway through december! this seems like an appropriate time to finish up with the last of the resolution reviews, because the second half of the month will be dedicated to rolling out new ones for 2011. (if you haven’t figured it out, this is my absolute FAVORITE time of year to blog!).

number 10 was, as always, a doozy:

#10: continue my quest for mindfulness. i actually really enjoyed revisiting this post (am i allowed to admit that?) — i think the calzone phenomenon is a very real one, and i still believe that taking artificial rush/urgency out of things is extremely important in a) producing better quality work and b) enjoying the process a million times more. this applies not only to calzones, but to patient care, household tasks, and more.

so how did i do?

i suppose it depends on the day. some days i think i do pretty well, and look around in amazement at how stressed out others seem. but sometimes i definitely still rush around too much, and get overwhelmed. just yesterday i struggled, yet looking at it from this morning’s perspective, there was NO FIRE (just a new diabetic — which at this point is a fairly standard and routine occurrence).

again, i think my resolution was too vague to really gauge failure vs. success, but i will say that i think about mindfulness while going about my daily life much more often than i did years back, and that in itself is probably a good thing.

also, i need to make these again.

just saying.
apartment therapy home cure: day 2
max went easy on us yesterday! the assignment was just to go out and buy some fresh flowers. had the temperature been above 25 degrees, this would have been even more fun (we’re in some sort of southern deep freeze right now).

i had errands to run anyway, so i headed out after work, making the whole foods flower department my last stop on my way home. as max had suggested spreading blooms around your dwelling, i initially looked at generous bouquets. but then i saw the calla lillies.

right at the entryway, so these petals greet with a splash of color
maybe i’m biased by my own stature, but i think small things can still pack a punch!

on the dining room table. maybe they’ll remind us to eat slower!
today’s assignment is another fun one: i get to search for inspiration. i have high hopes for the january issue of real simple already packed in my gym bag!

today is going to be a busy one
i will keep calzones in mind! what are your tricks for keeping urgency/stress out of your days?

12.14.10

workout: 5 miles on the ‘hard’ treadmill in our apt complex. the pace said 9:13/mi (0.5% incline) but it felt like a tempo. josh agrees that it’s off, so at least it’s not just me!

we have a winner: unless you are vegetarian or have some bias against really easy and delicious meals, you should make this.

i used whole wheat fettuccine and local pork sausage (i realize it was supposed to be turkey – i think i asked for the wrong thing at the counter), and this was just such a simple and comforting dinner. it would have been even better with some red wine, but i’m trying not to be such a lush.

I love the flowers! +1 to wanting it to warm up again. It&#39s times like this (when it&#39s -11F) that I feel a long way from home (I grew up in Florida).

beautiful flowers. gosh. i feel like such a stress ball lately! but the best way for me to combat stress is to make lists so i have a tangible idea of what i need to get done. it also helps me prioritize and know what&#39s a "need to" do and what&#39s a "want to" do (i&#39m sure you can relate 😉 )

Such pretty flowers. I admit, I skipped yesterday&#39s challenge…but I&#39m already seeing good results so I&#39m going to keep plugging along!

Lists help me manage my stress a lot, as does meditation. I&#39ve taken to meditating in the morning before work. I started with just 5 minutes and have worked my way up to 15-20 on some days. I&#39ve found a couple of useful guided meditation podcasts and apps that have helped with focusing my mind during meditation. I also try to take a moment or two for some deep breaths during the day if I&#39m getting stressed out with something, but I don&#39t always remember to do this in the moment!

i love the flowers, too. seems like EVERYWHERE is cold. i don&#39t know about nc, but where i am (md), it&#39s been windy too. the cold goes right through you (and i&#39m actually not complaining. can&#39t stand heat/humidity) also, i can&#39t wait to read your resolutions.
