i love women’s running

5 more minutes of fame
so, without further ado, here it is:

women’s running magazine, sept/oct 2009 issue, page 50

close-up shot of text

thank you to all who have already spotted me in the mag and commented/emailed! i got mine in the mail while in boston, but i wanted to wait until all of the HLS posts were done with before posting it here. a couple of people wrote to ask how i ended up in there — it was actually very easy and very random!

i really do love women’s running mag — i probably look forward to it the most of all of my 8 jillion subscriptions! one day, i went to their website to check out their training programs, and saw a link to apply for the women who move feature. figuring it was a long shot but WHY NOT, i wrote in some answers.

a few months later, i got an email saying that they liked my written replies and wanted some pictures! i figured that my chances were not so fabulous, since i am no running model (hellooooo, i’m 5’1″ with pale skin and short, stubby limbs . . . pure poetry in motion, right?). however, josh convinced me that it was worth a try, so we headed to chapel hill one spring day for a photo shoot, which i wrote about here. incidentally, my favorite picture is NOT the one they used, but this one:

obviously i can’t complain, though!

the text is not really written by me, by the way. the magazine writer pieced together answers that i had emailed her — that’s why there is definitely a ghost world-esque feel to some of the writing (lots of parentheses! use of ‘perspective is everything’!), but to be honest i would have loved to have a final chance to edit the copy because i think it gives the impression that i’m working ALLLLLL of the time and it’s not really the case. just sometimes! and also, the phrase ‘when i’m really hectic’ annoys me, as it’s not the proper word usage.

all that said, i am so thankful to women’s running for this opportunity and i’ll definitely be keeping the issue forever — it will be so much fun to show my kids some day! and just maybe it will inspire other overworked residents/med students that it is not impossible to fit running into a crazy schedule. i know it has been 100% worth it for me.

yet with all that said
i managed to NOT run yesterday for the third day in a row! actually, though, i think it’s for the best. i came home from the summit with a cold/virus just nasty enough to make me feel like i can only operate at about 50%. meaning: i can go to work, and i’m not having fevers, but my throat hurts, my nose is a faucet, and i’m feeling entirely exhausted.

i actually did try to run yesterday but after 1.3 miles on the treadmill i admitted to myself that it just didn’t feel right, and i stepped off. instead of trying to cram in training runs for the week, i think i will take this opportunity to just rest and run/work out be ear this week — ie, whatever i’m up to, based on how i’m feeling. i know from taking these sporadic breaks in the past that they do NOT hurt my fitness, and that they tend to be good for my psyche every once in a while. i may miss my daily endorphin rush, but i’ll be chomping at the bit on monday to fly down the street.

work, schmerk
yeah, i’m doing it, but i’m not really feeling passionate about it on this particular rotation. i don’t know whether it’s the virus, or the fact that the NICU just does not thrill me very much. it’s actually been quite slow, which is good because i hate emergencies, but bad because i need to get some procedures if i ever want to finish residency. i’m at the community hospital level 2 NICU, which equates to a bunch of preemies sitting around growing big enough to go home (unless, of course, they do something silly like get NEC).

read my 2007 account of this job here. i was such an eager little intern back then!

workout: fail. 1.3 miles . . . then the above realization that my body was not yet ready for such physical challenges.

doin’ time: martha is BACK!

indian-spiced chicken burgers (and yes, they were SPICED! i had a heavy hand on the cayenne pepper) with yogurt sauce + veggies. pretty good, but next time i won’t go so crazy with the heat.

reading: an article about bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
