they say it’s my birthday

May 20, 2009

that’s right, the big 2-9 is here! on this day in 1980, i finally decided to be born! some fun facts: i popped out 2.5 weeks later than predicted, and was made up of 7 lbs, 5 oz of baby fun. also, there was NO epidural involved in the process, which means my mother deserves to be showered with gifts on this day way more than i do.

although speaking of gifts, this trip is pretty much the best present ever. our bike trip was fabulous (pix to follow) and today on thet docket is a run, an in-room massage (!!!), and not much else. perfect.

this photo was taken on the way to the trip, out of the car window! vineyards are so photogenic.

ignore the fact that we look sun-shocked in this next one. we had a wonderful time biking to 4 different wineries! we covered 25 miles on trek hybrid bikes and both had a blast riding on the rolling terrain. once i learned how to properly get on and off my bike, the riding was pretty easy — josh was impressed so i guess my occasoinal spinning DID pay off!

our tour consisted of just us and an awesome guide who taught us a lot about the local wine scene (both the technical and business ends of things). the 4 wineries we hit were all in the dry creek valley around healdsburg. they included:

bella, where we bought a lovely 2006 zinfandel. they had a really cool cave where the tasting took place.
quivira, a biodynamic and fully organic winery. here we bought a summery rose.
dry creek vineyard, the largest of the 4. here we bought an award-winning fume blanc (apparently the same as a sauvignon blanc in this case).
everett ridge, which had the best scenery (the photo below is from here). we bought our last bottle here — a red blend called diablita.
cool wine-themed sculpture found along the way:
once we finished our biking trip, we headed to the farmer’s market (a tuesday-night mainstay in sonoma) and bought some fresh vegetables to make a simple dinner with our friends. they had done tasting nearby today and brought a very nice chardonnay. more wine was consumed:

doin’ time: well, not with martha — but we cooked! or, i should say, josh and brian cooked while i hung out with precocious, adorable samantha (the nearly-2-year-old). we bought some pre-marinated chicken from whole foods (walking distance from our B&B) and added a simple tomato salad and sauteed local squash. with some bread, cheeses, and crackers, it was a delicious dinner.

admittedly, josh and i felt a little ‘wined out’ this morning. it was still worth it!

this just in!: i think i had mentioned a while ago that i submitted photos and bio to women’s running magazine? checking my email this AM i got the AMAZING birthday news that they are going to feature me in their ‘women who move’ segment of the sept/oct issue! i’m so excited!!

First off, happy birthday! And congrats on the magazine feature – that will be so much fun and I am so jealous!
This is totally creepy, so please don’t think I’m the weirdest person ever, but you were actually in my dream last night. You had just given birth to a baby girl – she was literally the most beautiful baby I had ever seen. Also, you looked wonderful and slim and not like you had just given birth! Such a strange dream, but very fun!
    Enjoy your birthday and massage!
