November Favorites

November 25, 2015
I often find myself hearing a new song, or seeing a great movie, and then thinking I WANT TO SHARE THIS but then . . . I forget.  Furthermore, the more I keep my eyes open for great/fun/life-changing things in this world, the more I notice.  And since that’s potentially a win-win situation for both of us, I am going to aim to do a monthly post on favorites.

Please note that these are not sponsored content or affiliate links.  When I do receive something for free or to review, I will indicate this clearly!

1) Art/Media/Book

GRIMES.  I first heard Kill V Maim (yes, a song title) on NPR’s All Songs Considered and — well, in spite of the title, it was love at first listen.  It’s rare that I abandon my favorite podcasts on a morning run, but I listened to her new album Art Angels this morning and my tempo miles just flew.  It’s very poppy, but so much more interesting than the usual radio stream, both lyrically and musically.  Highly recommend, especially as workout music.

2) Everyday life essential

Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash.  I bought this because I had a $25 “shopping spree” to use after a Groupon-purchased massage as Bliss.  It has surpassed my expectations significantly.  It has these really tiny gentle particles that exfoliate without feeling harsh, and I actively look forward to using it in the shower (sorry if that’s too weird).  If you are looking for a facewash that gently exfoliates and leaves skin very soft, definitely give this a try.

3) Misc Treat

I get offers to review products from time to time (not often!), but usually turn them down because I do not want to get into an awkward situation if I don’t like something, and I don’t want to post anything that isn’t genuine.  However, I was so impressed that Alyssa had started a company as a family medicine resident (!!) that I emailed her right back that I would be honored to receive her subscription box.

She is a (fast) runner, and is curating a monthly box of treats called Runlovebox targeted to runners looking to get something fun (and perhaps motivating) in the mail.  Cost is $15/month, and you can order just one box if you want (I feel like 1-2 would make such a nice little gift for a fellow runner).

My box contained:

* coffee, which we are currently enjoying
* Nuun tablets, which I still haven’t tried
* Burt’s Bees lip balm, which I needed
* 2 GoMacro bars which were tasty and convenient
* a dry / wet shower wipe pack which I find very intriguing, and which I am saving for just the right moment
* Annabel’s hand is also featured as she was INTO this box

4) Fashion

Camper shoes.  I have been wearing Camper shoes (sandals and wedge booties) almost every single day to work, and they still look decent and are INCREDIBLY comfortable, especially for a shoe that gives me a good 3″.  ( = 5’4″!  I’ll take it!)
I don’t own these.  (Yet.)
No other brand has ever had the same level of comfort + style + durability.  Fan for life.

5) App/tech

I wrote about trying the Runcoach app in an earlier post, and so far – I love it!  And today I had a run that made me feel like perhaps it is actually making me faster.  An accurate interval timer “coach” is something I’ve never had, and it makes the workouts so much fun.

This morning’s assignment = 1.5 mi easy, 40 minutes at 9:09/mi, and cooldown.  I actually ended up at an ~8:40ish average for the tempo segment and it felt really good (it helped that it was actually closer to 70F than 80F this morning.  Finally.)
Anyway, the app works well and the customized plan seems worth the $20/month price tag.  Much cheaper than a real coach, anyway!  I think I will just use this app when training for races (don’t want to pay for it during ‘off seasons’) but I would definitely use it again.

6) Stationery love

OF COURSE this must be a category.  My stationery partner-in-crime Vickie introduced me to Mochithings, and now I am the proud owner of a wide array of planner stickers which I now realize are completely essential.

7) Posts
How to Start a Blog.  Because ONE DAY, FOR REAL, I am going to give this site a makeover.  2016.  Yeah!

Simple Kale Salad with a Walnut Vinaigrette  I want to make this!

A Gathering of Friends  A good reminder that entertaining doesn’t have to be a big deal or fancy to be wonderful.

8) Family Favorites
Cheese.  And The Little Mermaid 2 . Who knew there was a sequel?  And Ariel and Eric have a baby??

Happy November.  A lot to be thankful for right now.

I immediately thought of you when I came across the Mochithings site. I was like a kid in a candy shop (virtually) 🙂 one of their grid paper planner has stolen a piece of my heart. Ok I am going to stop being weird.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

I’ve been listening to a few of Grimes’ tracks on the radio and been uhming and ahing about buying it but I think I’m sold now. I was looking for a new album to run with and I love the poppiness of the first few songs off it.
