japanese straightening PR
i was pretty thrilled to get out of the salon in under 3 hours — definitely a straightening PR! the difference was that the salon i have been going to has downsized and the owner just runs his own studio and takes one customer at a time — so no waiting and no extra time spent between steps.
done at 2:52 pm (the appointment started at noon)
for anyone curious, the steps are as follows:
✔ initial wash (which is really wash #2 for the day)
✔ painting on of chemical-smelling stuff, mostly to roots
✔ sitting with chemical stuff ~25 minutes
✔ combing out hair a little with chemical stuff
✔ sitting 5-10 more minutes
✔ washing out chemical stuff (wash #3)
✔ meticulously drying and flat-ironing hair
✔ putting less-bad-smelling neutralizer onto hair
✔ sitting another 10-15 minutes
✔ washing that out (wash #4)
✔ cut (i got rid of ~ 3 inches and got some subtle layers)
✔ drying, straightening again
yes, it’s a process . . . but one that works! after whipping out my camera to gleefully capture the time (i don’t even know what moved me to do that, but whatever), i saw the oddest license plate:
can anyone think of anything this could mean other than meningitis? an infectious disease doctor, researcher, or perhaps just a really scary person must drive this car.
easiest dinner party ever
when i invite people over, i tend to get elaborate: lists of recipes, a long shopping list, and a detailed game plan. however, this sometimes backfires when i end up spending more time in the kitchen finishing things than hanging out with my guests! i invited some friends (all from my residency class) over for pizza on saturday night to celebrate our new roles. and i decided that for once, i was going to just make things as easy as possible . . .
wine:
homemade roasted eggplant dip, pita chips, multigrain chips, salsa, and vegetables to dip. i also added a plate of grilled local squash + zucchini.
this little cutie was all over the eggplant dip! talk about non-picky toddlers . . .
pizza was ordered while the adults snacked and sipped — and little t ran laps, worked on his soccer skills, and did tennis drills. seriously, the little guy was a blur:
we enjoyed a trio of medium pizzas from the loop (which josh was nice enough to pick up), and had some pretty (and um . . . store-bought) cupcakes and watermelon for dessert.
no, the meal was not a culinary masterpiece. but it was still delicious and was quite relaxing — not to mention super easy to clean up! i’m not about to declare that take-out dinners and bakery desserts are going to substitute for a homemade feast, but last night it was the perfect compromise.
focus
now to spend the next couple of hours focused on my research project! here goes nothing . . .

workout: 9 sultry miles in chapel hill. i stopped at home midway for some water and a few honey stingers. average pace 9:09/mi — i’m surprised, as it felt way slower!

cup cakes look great! Perhaps the license was that of a museum curator crazy over chinese dynasties. B says hi
atilla, that is QUITE the stretch . . . but i like it!
danielle: my stylist is always trying to get me to try brazilian (cheaper, faster) but i'm so happy with the japanese i'm afraid to switch! that's pretty much all i know about it.
carrie: it's straight all right, but i actually prefer it in a few weeks when it's a little less flat! i'll post a pic soon though.
denise: i think the brazilian is faster – maybe 1-2 hours? but it is not supposed to be as permanent.
i do dry it most days (just the top layers really) but i don't have to. a FAR CRY from my 'real hair' that has to be ironed into submission!
