the little things

May 27, 2010

all in the details
the first focus point for my own personal happiness project has been to delight in the mundane. to me, this means taking time/making a concerted effort to appreciate the fun or enjoyment in the everyday.

by ‘the everyday’, i am referring to things like:
✔ driving to work
✔ prepping meals
✔ cleaning and other household chores
✔ running errands
✔ work-related tasks, from seeing patients to writing notes
✔ studying/learning

upon devoting some thought to this, i am realizing that really, these things are what make up the bulk of our lives. little ‘no-big-deal’ things that may seem insignificant at the time. it’s so easy to tell ourselves, “i can scowl/rush through this, because it isn’t really that important.”

except the little things really do comprise most of what we do, and even perhaps define who we are.

a little things evening
last night, josh got home at around 7:30 pm and i hadn’t done anything to prep towards dinner (oops). i had also elected to lie on the couch and catch up with glee rather than work out (double oops). while the episode was good (gaga!), this choice did nothing for my mood or energy level. the little things were not equating to a particularly happy sum.

but then . . . cue my awesome husband and jillian michaels! it was time for COUPLES SHRED!

with our own music subbed for jillian’s (awful) banter and an impromptu dance session during ‘cardio’, we had a rollicking good time shredding side-by-side. of note, josh rocked 15 lb weights while i used 3-5.

dinner was another little thing: pizza from a box.

it’s always fun to try a new variety, though! this american flatbread didn’t taste super-gourmet, but it didn’t really taste like pizza from a box, either. it had a local pizzaria sort of flavor, complete with a generous cheesy topping.

it was just a little thing, but with a fresh salad (complete with locally grown romaine) + rosé + good company, it was another one of life’s nice moments.

moments add up
the thing about these moments is that they really do add up to something. in our case, 4 years-worth (to the day!) of these moments have passed since this happened:

tying the knot in the duke gardens, 5.27.2006
followed by this:

party @ la residence
yeah, that was a bigger moment. but they all count, and they are all important! and i wouldn’t trade any of them for the world.

enjoy both the BIG and little parts of your day!
