around again

cause vs effect
i woke up this morning, felt better about the world, and ran 7 miles. or maybe i woke up, ran 7 miles, and felt better about the world? either way, good. again, thank you all for bearing with my last few posts! your feedback was thoughtful, supportive, and true, and i appreciated all of it.

merry-go-round
just a few more circles on this carnival ride some call residency. i don’t know whether i’ll be happy or sad about my lifestyle and focus changing drastically every 4 weeks! taking the broad view: 32 done, 4 to go. wow.

i’m now finished with heme/onc (forever) and have started on an outpatient rotation designed to give me better in-depth exposure to developmental pediatrics, a field that focuses on children with disorders such as cerebral palsy, autism, and various genetic syndromes. it will be good prep for fellowship, as there is a lot of overlap with endocrinology. so many hormonal things can go wrong when the brain isn’t functioning the way it normally does!

not only is this rotation useful, but the hours are something like half of what i was spending last month on the wards. with my list of projects expanding (and due dates approaching), this is a very good (and lucky) thing.

i realize that i am sometimes a little too focused on task completion, losing the (life!) forest for the (checky box!) trees. i appreciated those of you who made me feel better about not always being super-productive. but i think that as a resident, there is a sharklike element of swim or die. as in, stop too long, and work will pile up (and life will pile up: important parts of life, like paying bills or doing your laundry or uhh . . . japanese straightening your hair) — and you will be sorry because there will be no way out.

breaks are fine, even necessary, but they just can’t last months. i’ll try to work on striking that elusive balance so that the enchanted forest of life doesn’t just pass by. less than 3 months left of my 20s, after all . . .

some more good news:
earlier sunrises, coming to a sky near you.
(unless you live in the southern hemisphere)
((hey, anyone reading from the southern hemisphere? now i’m curious! i’d love a shout-out 🙂 ))

workout: none. but today i finally ran, and oh it was good. i missed the endorphins so much!

blogworthy: dinnner last night was decidedly unblogworthy, but i got to go home for lunch today (!!! yeah, really !!!) and this . . . this was divine.

There is something so instinctual about starting the day when the sun is up and ending it when the sun is down. (If only our work days got shorter as the daylight hours do!)

It&#39s so nice that we&#39ll be getting some time back! (Maybe it will make us feel less rushed as well?)

Glad you are feeling better and that you&#39re on a rotation that is both interesting and easier on you physically.

It is nice that the days are getting longer. Just another little taste of spring!
