wise words + pretty paper!

gearing up
. . . for my 22 hour shift tonight! i was able to sleep in until 9:00 AM this morning, which is a bit of an improvement. my day will start with clinic at 1, and then the regular ol’ 17-hour night/AM shift beginning at 5 (or whenever i can make it to the hospital from clinic). i am trying to pump myself up/get inspired for this challenge in any way i can, including:

★ thinking about mindfulness. i like this quote:

“Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will); being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won’t).” – James Baraz

inspiration courtesy of the mindfulist, a new (and somewhat therapeutic) addition to my google reader

★ savoring the latest zen habits post on how not to hurry. i LOVE this piece on slowing down, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU CAN’T. here’s my favorite part:

“There will be some among you who will admit that it would be nice to slow down, but you just can’t do it … your job won’t allow it, or you’ll lose income if you don’t do as many projects, or living in the city makes it too difficult to go slowly. It’s a nice ideal if you’re living on a tropical island, or out in the country, or if you have a job that allows control of your schedule … but it’s not realistic for your life.

I say bullshit.

Take responsibility for your life. If your job forces you to rush, take control of it. Make changes in what you do, in how you work. Work with your boss to make changes if necessary. And if really necessary, you can eventually change jobs. You are responsible for your life.”

so true. thank you, leo babauta!

fashion friday . . . with a twist
anthro has so many new items that i’m actually a little overwhelmed. not that the influx has caused my cart full of wants to decrease in price, however. i’ll keep patiently waiting.

rather than beautiful clothing, today’s fashion picks are a BIT more affordable! i realized that i haven’t posted anything stationery-related since my latest planner post. my love for pretty paper products extends beyond the practical organizational realm, of course!

stationery is one of my favorite gifts to give AND receive. nothing makes me happier than a fresh new notebook or box of cards (well, nothing tangible, anyway). in fact, just browsing some of my choice stationery sites this AM has put a smile on my face without having to even buy anyting! here are a few highlights:

cute letterpress recipe cards from dingbat press, available at luxe paperie
this valentine flashcard at greer chicago reminds me of playing school. once a nerd . . .
this snow & graham card is a little more traditional. also from greer chicago
i couldn’t resist including this cheeky little notepad by 16 sparrows. also available at the online treasure trove of greer chicago
oldie but goodie: a pretty-yet-practical lined journal by quo vadis, available at the daily planner
what are your favorite things to browse for? share in the comments! mine are clothes + paper, because i think i am attracted to things that bring a little sparkle into a regular, normal day.

quick Q&A
ah, here’s an easy one!

“what hospital you are planning to do your upcoming Fellowship at?”

i am staying at duke for my pediatric endocrinology fellowship, which starts this july! i’ve known for a long time, which has been a blessing (one less thing to stress over!) and a curse (senioritis, much?).

by the time i’m done with this FINAL layer of training, i’ll have been at the same institution for 11 years (i did med school here, too). yikes! i didn’t really plan for that, but i’m really happy it has worked out because despite all my residency woes (which mostly surround sleep deprivation), i really like it here.

workout: 5 miles on the TM post-call, reading us weekly. i can’t tell if brad and angelina are really splitting up or not! those poor kids . . .

the run was a tempo, which i did as follows:
mile 1 9:13/mi
miles 2-4 8:00/mi
mile 5 9:13/mi

the 3 tempo miles were probably a little easier than they could have been. next time i will aim for sub-8! oddly enough, i felt much better on this run compared with tuesday’s treadmill progression workout. different machines? or just one of those running mysteries? i’ll never know.

splendid table dinner: if you recall, i’ve been trying to make at least one recipe/week this month from this cookbook, and last night’s selection was yet another hit from this tome.

smoked tofu succotash, with bonus avocado on top
of course, i made the tofu gliding calm-style. why mess with the best??

after dinner, i finally tried a product that was recommended to me by allie ages ago!

yes, it’s trader joe’s answer to LoYo!
the ingredients and nutritionals aren’t PERFECT . . . but they’re not horrible, either
served with some (local greenhouse!) strawberries, i thoroughly enjoyed this tart yogurt treat!

reading: i couldn’t quite get into the studying groove yesterday — and decided that was okay. instead, i followed up on the patients i had admitted via our online hospital computer system. it feels stalker-ish, but seeing the outcomes of my overnight decisions is actually very important from an educational standpoint. plus, i really want to know!

omg i sooo needed to hear that "slow down" quote right now!! i was just thinking about how stressed i am by trying to be on the go all the time but that just reminded me to take charge of my stressors and sloooooow down 🙂

I am a total stationery junkie–at any given time, I probably have 5 different patterns in my stash:)
Your dinner has me craving avocado!

Stationary–La sigh–it does bring joy doesn&#39t it. I bought the most stellar &#39ol school letter set today for a dollar–gotta love thrift stores…
It has bright yellow envelopes and a really gaudy rose pattern on the letter paper. My grandma will love it.

Isn&#39t TJ&#39s Tart Froyo a great version of Loyo-style places?? A whole carton is about the same price as a medium sized cup at Loyo. Definitely love having it in my freezer for whenever the cravings hits!

Eleven years?! Wow, that even trumps my 9 years (K through 8) at the Charles W. Henry Elementary School! L, da
