for this beautiful award!

many thanks to lee for this illustrious blog award! i think it might be my first one ever. apparently, this award comes with the requirement that i disclose 7 facts about myself. as if enough of me isn’t splattered about the world wide web as it is! just kidding, i love it, obviously.

here goes nothing . . .

■ i almost went into psychiatry instead of pediatrics. i even have blog proof of this! in this post, i proclaim that i am “almost sort of kind of pretty definitely sure.”

■ i hyphenated my last name (adding josh’s after mine) because i thought my previous name was too boring. i like it, but it seems like a lot of people are anti-hyphen. i also enjoy having the initials SHU.

■ i would love to have 3 kids someday and for 2 of them to be girls named cara and lily. of course, i’ll adapt to whatever happens!

■ in 2009, i bought at least 5 anthropologie dresses, but not a single pair of shoes other than for running.

■ i drink my coffee black and love it that way.

■ this morning, i am seriously considering a run in 24 degree weather.

■ i just moved my blog to theshubox! what, you knew that already? well, this is my sneaky way of reminding you to update your google readers and/or links!

the other fun part about this award is that it gets passed along to 7 worthy recipients of my choosing. i am going to stimulate the local blog-conomy and nominate my favorite triangle bloggers!

allie from live, laugh, eat
april from gluten hates me
meg from be fit, be full
jessica from johnstones vin blanc
caroline from the broccoli hut

plus, my blogging MBS, who i know will wear this badge with pride (maybe):
vickie from there is a light that never goes out
aimée from if you have to explain it

adolescent update
so far, the rotation has been pretty enjoyable. as the undergrads are on vacation, student health was not exactly hoppin’, but there were enough business school, grad school, and law school types to keep busy. i ended up seeing patients as old as i am, which is totally weird for me (and not exactly what i feel super-well-trained to do). it was interesting, nevertheless.

yesterday afternoon i worked in the adolescent eating disorders clinic. while i myself have never had an eating disorder, multiple close family members and friends of mine have. in the past, when i worked in this clinic during med school, i can remember getting really emotional — even sort of angry and upset — when i saw these patients, and i think it was related to continued struggles of my close contacts. interestingly, i didn’t have that sort of emotional reaction this time around, and found it pretty enjoyable to work with these patients.

i also think that because of my experiences, i am pretty good at knowing how to talk to these patients; it felt natural and i felt them responding well to me. this is good because there is a fairly large overlap of this patient population into pediatric endocrinology: patients who get referred because of amenorrhea, weight changes, or cold intolerance, and also a not insignificant (and increasing) number of mostly female diabetics who struggle with eating disorders as well (it’s a dangerous, scary combination . . . perhaps a factor in brittany murphy‘s death? who knows.)

off to run: OUTSIDE OR INSIDE? hmmm . . .

1.5.10

workout: 30 minutes elliptical (levels 10-12) + ~15 minutes weights before work:
– 2 x 12 pushups
– 2 x 12 deep squats to tricep press, 12 lb weight
– 2 x 12 walking double lunges, 8 lb weights
– 2 x 12 bicep curls
– 2 x 15 ball tucks
– 2 x 12 oblique crunches, each side

GC tofu! LOVE THIS RECIPE for chewy, sweet, and delicious asian-inspired tofu. i also love meals where i just stick things in the oven and they come out all transformed into winter delicacies.

with sweet potatoes and salad
close up tofu glamour shot

reading: about addison’s disease (random, i know). useful fact (for the medical types out there reading this): if someone has hypothyroidism AND adrenal insufficiency and you correct the thyroid without fixing the addison’s part, you can throw them into adrenal crisis! so, always consider whether the patient has any signs of low adrenal function before loading them up with synthroid.

not sure glamour shot and tofu actually can be juxtaposed in a phrase

"almost sort of kind of pretty definitely sure."

HA!!! i love that. i am similarily indecisive and wishy washy about declaring things for certain sometimes.
psychiatry would have been pretty different eh.

outside!! and i&#39m glad your enjoying the adolescent rotation. it sounds like it&#39s both very challenging and very interesting. but i can see how it would be weird to see patients your age when student health was slow — awkward 🙂

That is a very highly pimped tidbit around here 🙂 Reading about your indecision comforts me as I had a mini-freakout last night…I am torn between rad onc and peds after my peds rotation. How did you end up choosing peds in the end?

Loved learning some new things about you! I, too, am an Anthro fan, but I also have a ridiculous addiction to shoe-shopping!
Thanks for the award, lovely lady!
