josh and i had a quiet little christmas to ourselves last night, enjoying a simple dinner after work and blasting lady gaga's christmas tree, mariah carey's all i want for christmas, and the traditional waitresses christmas wrappings (although i love that song enough to play it all year).
we didn't do a big gift exchange, although josh did buy me a robe to replace the one i have had since like i was like, a preteen (seriously). someone from the ritz carlton gifted two kids-sized robes to my father on a business trip wayyyyyyyyy back in the day and sadly i never got tall enough to outgrow it. it was a lovely robe although admittedly in tatters for the last few years. my new one is also adorned with the ritz carlton logo -- josh knows i don't like to mess with tradition. we'll see if it lasts another 20 years into my 40s!
he also bought me a stylophone because he heard that lady gaga used one in the background of one of her tracks. it's like my own personal Rock Band setup, without the screen! i enjoyed jamming along to xmas favorites last night (i have perfect pitch and can play songs by ear, so it's extra fun for me).
honestly, though, i didn't need any big gifts because let's face it -- I BASICALLY BUY MYSELF WHATEVER I WANT. not that we're rich (we're residents!), but somehow this seems to be okay, because we have actually been able to save some money despite my growing anthro dress collection.
and because christmas was on the minimal side, because it is already selling out in my size in the other colors, and because I FOUND IT FOR $70 on EBAY (!!), this baby is coming home to mama for christmas:
resolution #5: workout reform
there's health care reform, and then there's workout reform. hopefully the latter will be less complicated! yesterday, i set out to do a yogadownload that i had on my computer -- a 45 minute ashtanga session that was labeled intermediate/advanced.
let's just say that it was a gentle reminder that i am more of a beginner. that session was HARD for me! see, the thing is:
■ i am not flexible
■ i am not strong
both of which make yoga very difficult for me. it's especially weird and hard because 11 years ago, i WAS flexible and strong, and did some yoga in college, and now i feel like i'm revisiting the practice with a body less suited to its challenges. i used to love doing tripods and headstands, and loved to get out of wheel position by flipping over into a back walkover.
now? i may be able to run marathons, but i can't do any of those things. and i'd really love to be able to again. so resolution #5 is workout reform. i am NOT about to give up running, but i'd like to tone it down a bit in favor of more yoga and strength training.
i will still train for a half marathon this spring, but i will use a plan with runs just 3-4 days each week. i vow to be more consistent with strength training -- who knows, maybe someday i WILL be able to do one pull-up! i will also do my best to get to a REAL yoga class once in a while! yesterday's session reminded me of just how good of a workout yoga can be, and i really do enjoy it especially when it's more at my current level.
