coats, gifts, and pumpkin: I guess it’s november

a productive morning

seltzer holiday color wheel, available at greer chicago

something, somewhere caught my eye. and then, with a few strategic clicks, i bought all of my MBs their holiday gifts!! i WISH i could share what i bought here, but these wonderful ladies are also readers of this blog (for the most part) and i don’t want to take away from the joy and surprise that awaits them when they tear into their packages in a few weeks.

there is no question that this is the most on-top-of-things i have ever been with respect to holiday shopping. of course, there are many others on my list, but still. i’m pretty proud of myself right now.

nights, continued
so how is it that i am able to sit here at 11 AM typing up a blog post and online-shopping up a storm (hey, at least it’s not for me!)? it’s my party nocturnal lifestyle, of course. i had a much needed night off yesterday, but now i have 3 more night shifts (11 pm to 7 am) in a row. at least they are all 8 hours rather than 12! that makes a huge difference.

today’s completely annoying schedule
1 pm – 6 pm: clinic
6 pm – 11 pm: twiddle thumbs, make dinner, attempt to nap
11 pm – 7 am: night shift

yeah. whoever thought up that little arrangement is NOT getting a beautiful box filled with treasures from me this season. again, it’s certainly better than the consecutive 30 hours that go along with any ward month, but still. i guess i’ll be happy later when i have more full days off.

in the hopes of feeling at least halfway human in the middle of the night for the next 3 nights, i am trying to stay on a more late-night schedule. yesterday i slept from about 8 am to 3 pm, and then stayed up about as long as i could stand (2 am). i made the most of my middle-of-the-night downtime: baking and catching up on grey’s anatomy were my activities of choice!

and enjoying my baked goods for a late-night snack, of course.

unfortunately i did not capture mcdreamy in this screen shot.

pumpkin goodness
yes, i managed to bake something that doesn’t suck. this time, i avoided any sort of higher math (read: elementary school division) that comes along with halving a recipe and made meghann’s pumpkin scones. i had seen her mouthwatering pictures on one of her posts and promptly starred the recipe to make for myself.

mine didn’t come out quite as pretty as hers did:

but they were still delicious. the one modification to the recipe that i would make next time would be to add a pinch of salt. i find that it adds a nice depth to baked goods, and i missed it a little in these scones. the texture was spot-on, though, and pumpkin-y goodness abundant!

thanks, meghann, for the recipe!

elsewhere in blog-land
one of my favorite bloggers is the sweet and creative (also, gorgeous) gliding calm. i had warm and fuzzy feelings seeing her coats from around blogland post. what a fun idea! love it. and it just makes me want to buy the anthro beauties from yesterday THAT much more (but don’t wory, josh, i’ll be good).

11.2.09

workout: 40 minutes cycling + weights
– 2 x 12 pushups
– 2 x 12 walking double lunges, 8 lb weights
– 2 x 12 bicep curls, 12 lb weights
– 2 x 12 tricep extensions on ball, 8 lb weights
– 2 x 12 lateral/forward raises
– 2 x 15 bicycle crunches

i was spent at the end of that. looking forward to a rest day today!

doin’ time: do pumpkin scones count? i was planning out dinners for the week and realized i am down to just 11 martha recipes!!! i can’t believe the project is actually coming to an end. i plan to write about:

☑ the pros and cons of doing a cook-through
☑ what i loved about cooking with martha
☑ what i didn’t love about cooking with martha
☑ top 10 recipes from the book
☑ my next culinary project

reading: more on knee injuries. I COULD NOT SUCK MORE at musculoskeletal stuff. also, i hate it. and find it painfully boring. but, i’m supposed to know something about it, and it’s on the boards. so i finished the knee injury article in peds in review and even took the accompanying quiz online.

75% might suck but it is far superior to the 0% i would have gotten before reading the article!

i started nights a couple weeks ago, and it&#39s 7:45pm to 8:15am…at first it sucked, but you do get used to it! At least i only have to do 3 shifts a week. I&#39m finding that when i come home from work, the best i can do is sleep from 9:30am until 2 or 3pm, but then on my days off i end up being able to sleep normal hours (at night) and for 10-12 hours! Do you find that the worst hour is from 4-5am? i always end up trying to fight off this incredible urge to take a nap in one of the empty beds on the floor (if there is one, that is).
