productive weekend
when people asked what i did with my free weekend, i’m not going to have much to say. because i was on backup call, i wasn’t able to go anywhere or do anything too crazy, plus josh was at the hospital pretty much the entire time (sad, but true). i built furniture, blogged, did housework, and ran a bunch of miles, basically! however, it was actually a very productive and therapeutic weekend for me. for the first time since our vacation, i finally feel organized, and it’s a lovely way to start the week.

apartment therapy is progressing well! my sister loves building furniture and agreed to come over in a flash when i offered her a big IKEA project to work on, CD-burning opportunities, and the promise of beef bulgogi for dinner (her hometown-best-friend is korean and she loves korean food!). yes, it’s easy to lure her to my lair.

she earned her keep by building most of the chest of drawers you see below! there were a few tense moments (josh had to perform emergency furniture surgery at one point — thank goodness he did eventually come home), but the operation was definitely an overall success! i stayed up until 11 pm (LATE for me!) finishing up the drawers.

it was worth it!

seriously, what an improvement! this project is far from finished, but every improvement makes a difference. you should have seen the ugly and dilapidated chest that had been in this baby’s place. actually, you can still see it if you come over because it’s sitting in our living room!

i am going to call goodwill and see if they will do a pickup — we also will have our boxspring and 2 night tables (which are less ugly/torn up) to donate. i thought about just posting the items free to craigslist, but i don’t really want to have random people coming up to my apartment. after we were robbed in 2007 i am much less trusting of . . . the world! oh well. anyone have any experience or wisdom to offer regarding giving away/donating old furniture?

the return of doin’ time: oh, martha, i missed you!!! josh, my sister, and i all really enjoyed her version of beef bulgogi, a korean dish made up of thin strips of beef sauteed with vegetables. her version suggests making it into lettuce wraps, which were fun to eat. i had been worried about it being a little too boring, because, well . . .martha isn’t exactly korean! but she faked it well. the flavors were outstanding — i was impressed! i would definitely make this again.

we don’t eat beef very often, but enjoyed this a lot. i used whole foods grass-fed organic rib-eye for the beef.

reading: a review article on gaucher disease. definitely high-yield for boards purposes!

When we were giving away furniture before our last move, the local Goodwill was not picking up because the price of gas was too high (this was last summer), but AmVets was so they are another option if your Goodwill says no.

    Cute dresser, btw.

Quiet weekends can be just as rewarding as crazy weekends…and leave you with a clearer mind for the week.

    Like the dresser!

May I propose a barter? I&#39m in need of two nightstands (IKEA let me down when I was there a couple of weeks ago). Would you be willing to trade your old ones for a few hours of labor for IKEA furniture assemblage? I&#39ve gotten pretty good at deciphering those crazy Swedish instructions, and I can bring my own Allen wrench. 🙂

Sounds like a hugely productive weekend! I love getting my house in order…for some reason it always helps me focus better on my work when my house is in place. (I know, that probably makes me sounds like I&#39m a 90-year-old woman! 😉 ) Your beef bulgogi looks delish!

i think the local PTA takes furniture, they have one near wholefoods and a bigger one in carrborro by weaver street market.
