brown paper packages

October 30, 2009

tied up with strings . . .
truly are among my favorite things. it’s been a great week for the mail in this household! thus far, we have received:

☑ my anthro package!
☑ josh’s secret birthday present (DON’T look for it, babe)
☑ delicious dry-ice-packed goodness (see below)
☑ annual miami halloween bonanza

i also got the december (!) issue of runner’s world and the latest clean eating (which i criticized in this post but then decided had great recipes and ideas despite the overall philosophy being a little too spartan for my taste). seriously, how much fun are packages (and mags) in the mail? there are few things more exciting then tearing into a cardboard box addressed to you!

anthro loot: fashion friday
how timely! my anthro gear (reward for my NICU suffering 2 weeks ago) arrived this week. i was super-excited to greet this box at the door! i think that i am going to keep all of the items, but i’m not 100% sure. i’d love your thoughts/opinions. also, excuse the hair. i didn’t blow dry it — it was my day off!

you can see by my (ridiculous) face that i was not completely sold on this skirt when i first put it on. it’s the whorl and twirl skirt (in petite) that i got on sale.

i LOVE the fabric and the multiple layers, but . . . i know this is a horrible cliché, but i’m concerned that the pleating and overall puffiness might make my butt look big(ger). then again, since it is obviously lined and pleated, maybe it looks okay. not that anyone can really answer this question since this is only a front view. and i’m not posting butt pictures on the blog: must draw the line somewhere.

next is the directional button-up, which is pretty funky but super-comfortable (SOFT!) and quite different from the typical sweatshirt.

i was unsure at first, but i think it’s a keeper. i dimmed this picture not to pretend i have a palm beach tan, but to show the details of the shirt (it sort of got ‘whited out’ with the first pic).

finally, we have the paragon top. this is actually the item that i was least sure about . . . tops like this are not always flattering (and sometimes look like full-on maternity wear on me). however, the light and flowy fabric made this one drape in a good (non-pregnant-appearing) way! love it.

happy halloween!
the next package arrived from miami beach, courtesy of josh’s grandparents. they are a wonderful pair of fun, stylish, whimsical, artistic people! their tastes run from the refined (on the side, they deal in beautiful georg jensen silver) to absolute kitsch (as you will see below).

they do not seem think that the fact that WE ARE OLD has any impact on our need for a huge box filled with halloween goodies. or, perhaps it’s a subtle hint that they would like us to procreate sooner rather than later (josh is the oldest of their 9 grandchildren, but 3 others have already produced great-grandbabies), so they can send these packages to kids who will really go nuts for them.

just check out this stash!

josh with his “scary face”, demonstrating that he is in fact young at heart

i will be bringing some of this to the ER tonight to give to some deserving kiddies. although the skull plate isn’t going anywhere — i love it!

chobani
i was thrilled to receive this multicolored package from chobani! during a productive spurt on my day off last week, i wrote to a few companies whose products i was interested in trying/reviewing, and shari from chobani was nice enough to send me a yogurt variety pack! in actuality, i was most interested in the pomegranate (which is apparently backordered due to a shortage!), but any yogurt in the mail is pretty exciting as far as i’m concerned.

they arrived nice and cool, nestled in dry ice.

in my excitement, i slashed it open with a pair of scissors . . . going straight through 3 of the covers. OOPS! however, a quick layer of plastic wrap and i think they should be okay for a couple of days. josh saw these in the fridge and went for one right away.

he picked pineapple.

looks like he liked it! i tasted it and can see why: this is a great yogurt. sweet-but-not-too-sweet, with a piña colada flavor. i’ll post a more detailed review later on when i’ve tried more of the flavors, but this one gets the S+J seal of approval.

the package that hasn’t arrived
dude, where’s my sigg? i sent my BPA-containing bottle back to the company (recall details in link) nearly 2 months ago. i’ve been bottle-less since then! not sure what’s up with that.

if i have to wait much longer, i may try to get my hands on one of these . . .

yes, it’s an orla kiely bottle! this collaboration with brita came out over a year ago, but is still not available in the US. there is always ebay, however . . .

workout: since i was off yesterday and will be working all weekend (yuck), i did my long run early. my schedule worked out nicely in that the cutback weeks fall on my heavier work-weeks, and my 18- and 20- milers will be easier to fit in.

this time i ran in chapel hill — i don’t want to get too used to the flat tobacco trail when the marathon i am running is somewhat hilly! i finished 13 miles in 1:55, for 8:53/mi average. i was pretty tired by the end, probably because i had done speedwork just the day prior.

doin’ time: no new martha creations today, but i enjoyed the chicken/mushrooms/acorn squash in bowl form along with some arugula. this lunch to me looks very kath-like!

I like all 3 of those Anthro items! The top especially…so cute with the skinny jeans.

I went to Anthro in Chicago yesterday and wanted EVERYTHING. Especially all the housewares. Gorgeous plates + glasses, even cabinet knobs!

the skirt and the sweatshirt are definite keepers. they both look great on you, and are both stylish and unique 🙂 the flowy shirt also looks good with the skinny jeans..

Your mail is much more exciting than mine. Most of mine went straight to the recycling bin.

I love everything! I think the flowy top could look cute with a skinny belt as well to give it a bit more shape. I wish we had an anthro here, sigh!
