moonlit
i will be doing my first ever moonlighting tonight! in the residency world, this means taking extra work (generally medically-related) during precious off hours in exchange for a little extra cash. actually, to me it’s a LOT of extra cash — although i suppose i may be easy to impress in that department having never had a job in the business world.

the numbers? nah, i don’t mind sharing: tonight, i will make $70/hour (minus taxes, of course) for 19 hours (5 pm today until noon tomorrow). oddly enough, it’s not like i will be doing anything different from what i’ve done before! i had 8 30-hour NICU calls last fall that paid diddly-squat, and i was actually covering more patients then.

even with taxes taken out, i can do the math that tonight’s shift (plus another one that i’m signed up for in october . . .) translates to a decent chunk of guilt-free shopping! i won’t go too crazy, but here are some things i may be dreaming about on any downtime tonight:

♥ new camera!
♥ boots (since i keep talking about them!)
♥ skinny jeans (for real this time)
♥ some new clothes for my deserving husband
♥ fall jacket/trench that is waterproof

this one is pretty awesome, although still a little too cher pour moi

thinking about these will certainly help get me through the night!

material fantasies aside, i will also be fervently hoping that i get some much-needed intubations to add to my procedure log. a UAC (umbilical artery catheter) would be a nice bonus, as well! the truth is that as much as i am excited about the $$$, the other reason i am taking these shifts is that i am slightly NICU procedure deficient. my goal is to be as outspoken as possible about my need for getting these procedures, and hopefully luck will be on my side.

if only i could get a view like that!

i am visualizing slipping ET tubes through wide-open vocal cords right now . . . honestly, if i could BUY the intubations with the moonlighting cash, i would. that’s how badly i am dying to have these checked off of my ‘need for graduation!’ list. WISH ME LUCK!

workout: rest day!

doin’ time: behold: the EASIEST martha recipe yet! whole wheat linguini + tomato slices on the grill with salt, pepper, olive oil, and dried thyme = DINNER. with a pile of lightly dressed arugula on the side, and a slug of wine for good measure.

reading: about the lantus/cancer controversy. i am going to be presenting on this topic in 2 weeks — i am still not convinced as to my position! statistics are amazing (and confusing) things . . .

You definitely deserve to go shopping with that extra cash. What kind of new camera do you want? I&#39ve been coveting an SLR one but I don&#39t think that&#39s going to happen anytime soon.

wow a shopping trip is definitely in order! so you need to buy the intubation tubes yourself? if that&#39s true that&#39s wicked lame!

I have to intubate rats at work with a pediatric laryngoscope and a 14 gauge angiocatheter, and I would also love to have a view like that! Good luck getting your procedures!

Good luck on getting all the intubations you need, although I wouldn&#39t want to wish illnesses on anyone! 😉 I wish I was smart enough to be a doctor! Instead, I got payroll….eh!

Hope you get some procedures…I hope I get some, too! Though it&#39s kind of scary…I haven&#39t done any besides taps.

I&#39ve been meaning to tell you – it&#39s my humble opinion that you can definitely pull off the skinny jeans. You&#39re so teeny tiny!

best moonlighting experience I remember is standing and you know what I mean by standing in the bathroom next to my chairman when he asked me why an application for privileges came across his desk for me at a Fairfax VA hospital. We were not supposed to moonlight! I just said that I had three kids was in the lab and needed to make a little extra cash. He replied " just don&#39t do too much of that" washed his hands and walked away. I finished my business and then nearly passed out.

    That is a gorgeous trench.

It`s great that you have the opportunity to do some moonlighting and earn that extra cash. Good luck with it!

I say boots! And I sneak away $20 in cash per pay period and drop it in a kleenex box for my guilty free shoppping….I love to buy $6 jams at farmer&#39s markets or score at Anthropolgie with them!
