multitasking: friend or foe?

so close
this is post #998 on 9.9.9. ONE extra entry, and it could have been magic!

finding focus
talking to my dad on the phone last night, i trailed off mid-sentence at one point. this happened to be at a point in the sentence when i was about to say josh’s name, so of course this was followed by some gentle ribbing that i had forgotten it.

“no,” i said, “it’s just that a new email popped up and i got distracted.”

nice, sarah. way to enjoy a meaningful conversation with your own flesh and blood — in front of the computer, reading emails as they pop up. luckily my father is good-natured and did not seem to mind too much. instead, he pointed out that — for better or for worse –i have always been a multitasker.

i used to draw while watching movies, read books while playing the piano, or talk on the phone while painting my nails. i stretched while studying. i was always involved in one more activity than i could really handle.

now, at the gym i can often be seen running with a magazine and music, and possibly a trashy tv show on in the background. i talk on the phone while driving (bad, i know). and i’ll even check my email while waiting for someone to answer a page at work.

the outcome? honestly, i think that in some ways i am doing myself a disservice with all of these distractions. i’ve said it before, and i meant it — life and work is more enjoyable when you really get into the flow of things, and for me that means letting go and immersing myself in one — and only one — activity.

today’s goal is to find that flow again, and focus on one. thing. at. a. time. here goes nothing!

take that, iPhone
ooh, so pretty! check out this new planner concept from moleskine — a rainbow of little notebooks, one color per month.

stack of small, one-page-per-day, dated monthly notebooks

a storage case that makes me smile. LOVE the stripes!

all bundled up, brick-like.

photos from moleskines.com

part of me is drooling over this, because OMG IT’S RAINBOW! and i love the idea of a new start each month. however, in reality i will probably stick with my weekly format — working with 7 days at a time actually fits my lifestyle better. plus, i am currently too obsessed and enamored with smooth, whiter-than-white clairefontaine and exacompta paper to switch over to moleskine.

i will memorize this!

this month. mark my words. pinkie-swear.

9.8.9

workout: an interval run that went a bit awry.
the workout: 6 x 800m, with w/u and c/d to total 5 miles
warmup: 9:28/mi pace for 0.5 mi
800m #1: 7:57/mi pace (downhill)
800m #2: 7:22/mi pace (downhill)
800m #3: 7:49/mi pace (mostly flat)
800m #4: 7:44/mi pace (mostly flat)
800m #5: 8:00/mi pace (uphill)
800m #6: 8:20/mi pace (also uphill)

total: 5 mi @ 8:31/mi average

either i need to find a flatter place to do these, or i can just consider them interval/hill repeat workouts. the latter might be easier!

doin’ time: i tried to surprise josh by telling him this meat was BISON after he tasted it, but he saw the label while putting groceries away so it wasn’t much of a big reveal.

it was good, though. i like how there is absolutely nothing processed on this plate! REAL FOOD is awesome.

I am the queen of multitasking–but sometimes it bites me in the behind. Like yesterday, when I was grading HW for my TA position AND talking to a friend from class…not good…so being OCD, I went back and checked every HW to make sure I did it right. I did not make a mistake yesterday, but that doesn&#39t mean it is good for me to talk and grade at the same time. haha 😉

the jeans look awesome!! i covet the rainbow moleskine set myself but agree that it is a little cumbersome. it&#39s so pretty that i could see myself buying it in a moment of weakness! i am considering my 2010 options and maybe when you visit you can convince me to switch to exacompta.

Those planners make me ALMOST want to go back to paper!

If I&#39m ever distracted when on the phone with my mom, she&#39s very quick to assume that I&#39m on the computer while talking to her…which she hates! I feel bad and she usually offers to let me go at that point. 🙁 I think our generation is so used to doing eight things at the same time, which probably isn&#39t a good thing.

That planner is so pretty, but it could be a bit much to carry everything around…what if you need plans for October and it&#39s only April??

Love the colourful planner! I&#39m such an A personality…organization is a must in my life!

    We really like bison, too!

Even though it&#39s gorgeous, the yearly planner looks too big to carry around easily.

I&#39ve always been a big multi-tasker. I just can&#39t watch TV or a movie without doing something else. College football season is when I do all my Christmas ornaments.

I love the moleskin set, wow!

I am the worst multitasker ever! I am always doing like 100 things at once. I really need to work on slowing down too!

  • Reply Jess March 10, 2019 at 7:28 pm

I&#39m a huge multi-tasker. Doing one thing at a time is almost weird for me.

I&#39m about to copy you and do a cookbook challenge. Your meals just look too good.

I love when numbers work out in ways that only are of interest to you. I love when my dictation ID numberis a cool pattern like a pallindrome or repeated numbers
