oh, martha
most of the time, i love you. but sometimes, after making 2 of your supposedly ‘fast’ recipes, i am dismayed to see that the kitchen looks like this:
yuck! if someone were to write a cookbook full of (delicious-looking) recipes designed to create the absolute minimum amount of mess, i would buy it.
jungian link love
i loved this little piece about carl jung’s red book from quo vadis blog.
image from nytimes.com
here’s the excerpt they included:
“I should advise you to put it all down as beautifully as you can — in some beautifully bound book … It will seem as if you were making the visions banal — but then you need to do that — then you are freed from the power of them … Then when these things are in some precious book you can go to the book & turn over the pages & for you it will be your church — your cathedral — the silent places of your spirit where you will find renewal. If anyone tells you that it is morbid or neurotic and you listen to them — then you will lose your soul — for in that book is your soul.”
just replace ‘book’ with ‘blog’, and i wholeheartedly agree. i’d put carl jung on my reader any day!
endo dreams
i’m so sad that this month is coming to a close! spending 4 weeks on endocrine was like a dream come true for me — a dream that really will come true in just 9 months. i am so glad that i found a specialty that matches my personality and interests so well! there is SO much more to learn, so next year will be a continuation of the steep learning curve i’ve experienced this month.
i was complaining to josh this morning that i wished residency was over. i have to go to a suture workshop this afternoon, and i’m all like “HELLO, ENDOCRINE FELLOWS DO NOT SUTURE.” he told me to ‘get over yourself’ (thanks, darling) and while that sounds a little mean, he’s right — residency is only 3 years long and i can’t just skip the last 9 months of it (in reality OR in spirit!). so: i will try to make the best of the situation.
instead of seeing it as useless, i’ll try to embrace non-endocrine-related experiences as my last chance to get proficient in things like stitching up wounds or resuscitating babies. because you never know when you might be stranded on a desert island — or with doctors without borders in africa — needing to do these things. someday.
bouncy
i’m excited for this morning’s run on new kicks! the same ones as last time (asics gel landreth) but so fresh and so clean (clean).

doin’ time: the pecan-crusted catfish probably would have been better using actual catfish, but i subbed some frozen whole foods cod. it wasn’t really worth the mess. the salad, on the other hand, was delicious. i ignored martha’s instructions and baked the little goat cheese rounds, which was a good decision. melty goat goodness = the best part of the meal!
reading: about autoantibodies seen in type 2 diabetes patients (conventionally thought to be only a type 1 thing, but strangely present in clinically type 2 individuals as well)

Or think about it this way: What if there was ever an emergency in the real world and you had to resuscitate someone's baby? You would be that mother and father's hero for life. That's a "real world" skill. All my SAS programming will never help me save someone's kid. Sewing up pig's feet sounds like it could be kind of fun… maybe.
Ahhh clean new running shoes are awesome, especially when sat next to your old graying pair!
At this point, I think that any experience I get in the hospital (good or bad…) will be beneficial in the future in one way or another…at least to be able to say I did it…you never know when it will come in handy! I'm sure the next nine months will fly by…
i love breaking out new shoes!!! i need to get mine out soon, like today 🙂 yours are very pretty too!
I just got new shoes…after something like almost 2 years…HORRIBLE!
Let's see if this will perk your spirits. There is a resident in my program who, for some reason, has to do two more years of residency AFTER she completed her endocrine fellowship…she is SO frustrated. I keep telling her to look forward to being able to practice but I think she sees TWO years instead of past the two years!
