apartment therapy

is there an apartment ICU?
several months ago, josh and i looked around our apartment and decided that an upgrade was in order. our furniture, for the most part, is made up of worn and tired-looking bargain-basement picks from target and the like. while we may not have “real” jobs yet (residency = purgatory), neither of us feels fresh-out-of-college any longer, and we feel like we can afford to step it up, at least a little bit.

i love clean, modern, and minimalist designs.

like this bed. but according to apartment therapy, this baby costs $3000. not exactly within reach at this point. so where does a design and budget-conscious couple in an ‘intermediate’ living situation head to find domestic bliss?

ohhhhh, but of course:

so we are headed off on a pilgrimage west, where there is an ikea located in charlotte, NC. on the way, we will stop at high point and drool over furniture that may not be quite as budget-friendly. whether we find one or two amazing pieces there or just use that part of the journey for inspiration, it will be fun and interesting.

take 5
i asked josh to choose 5 words to describe the decor of his dreams, and i played as well.

his 5
calming
abstract
uncluttered
sophisticated
interesting

my 5
clean
uncluttered
peaceful
modern
colorful

certainly a good amount of overlap. i found myself caring a lot more about what my environment does NOT contain — dirt, mess, and clutter — than what it does. perhaps instead of buying things i should hire someone to clean up around here! or maybe we just need to look for design solutions that promote organized/uncluttered living. bring it on, ikea!

refreshing
yesterday after driving back from richmond (atilla, the hotel was in richmond where the gaga concert was, which is why you didn’t recognize it from your years in cville!), we spent the day lounging around and watching episode after episode weeds, season 3. i’ll admit it: it was thrilling to be so lazy. it felt so nice to just give into whatever rather than following some predetermined schedule or plan. josh and i even went on a 1.5 mile run, which ended because i just wasn’t feeling it.

this morning i also enjoyed sleeping in and a long, drawn out relaxing breakfast/blogging session. i’m about to follow it with a (real) run, and then after some quick cleanup we’re off on journey #2 of this vacation.

i’ll just leave you with my orla fantasy kitchen:

beautiful!

Your vacation looks awesome and apartment shopping will be fun. Nice job on the long run–it&#39s great when they start to feel easy.

I think we went into Apartment Therapy when we were wondering around Chicago. Beautiful stuff but $$$. I&#39ve actually never been in an IKEA before. The closest one here is 4.5 hours away. Sigh.
