post-call reward

3 down, 5 to go!
last night’s call night was actually . . . great! if i could count on getting 6 hours of sleep while at the hospital, i’d have no problem taking every-4th-night call! we were incredibly lucky to get our admissions in early, and for some reason everyone just seemed to do okay overnight. nights like that are few and far between, and have a sort of magical ‘i-can’t-believe-this-is-actually-happening’ quality, but once in a while, they do occur. my intern actually paged herself a couple of times to make sure the paging system was still operational (actually, it has gone down before — scary!).

watts grocery: post call reward

clearly, being 37.5% finished with the calls within this block deserves some sort of celebration, right? josh and i headed out on a double date with friends (one peds resident + his girlfriend). it has been way too long since we did anything like that — it seems like it’s always just us (which i also love) or a big group. anyway, being a foursome was fun! because we weren’t all in the same program, we managed not to spend the thole time talking/bitching about work. sometimes i really like going out with just 2 or 4 others — enough to spice things up, but without competing conversations, which can be distracting.

so . . . the food! josh and i had been to watts grocery once before, and while we liked it, i admit it hadn’t made a huge impression. i think we enjoyed our experience tonight a bit more. though i’m questioning my choice now (my head is kind of buzzing), i was really excited to start off with a cocktail from this tempting list:

i certainly got my money’s worth with this creation, which was not too sweet and full of tequila, just how i like it.

we ordered appetizers, including a crab cake and a local tomato salad, both of which were excellent. the heirloom tomatoes were fresh and flavorful, and a sweet-tart dressing made a side of baby greens a zesty accompaniment. there were a few entree choices that were tempting, but in the end i went for an old restaurant standby: fish.

as you can see, the plate was heaped with local red snapper, roasted vegetables, and potatoes. i didn’t come close to finishing this pile of deliciousness, but i enjoyed every bite.

afterwards, we split the lemon coconut chess pie for dessert, snagging the last slice in the place! i’m sad to say that by that point i was off my game and forgot a picture, or maybe it was so good that it just got devoured faster than the camera could capture it. just imagine fluffy coconut on top of a lemon custard on a rustic-looking crust, festooned with blackberries. it was GOOD.

date night picture! ignore the tired appearance — remember, post-call!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it’s bedtime. goodnight!

Wow…you did have an awesome night! Neither I nor my resident got any sleep our last call. I just about had a breakdown…once when a nurse was unclear in her request and the second when the elevator STOPPED and then started slowly "falling." Ahh! That restaurant looks pretty cool!

It seems like you never run out of wonderful-sounding restaurants! You must live in one of the restaurant capitals of America!
