my own monday

emergency fridge restocking
after over 10 days, i finally made it to whole foods to refill our empty kitchen! living off of pb & j spread onto any stray carb-containing product i could find was getting old, believe it or not. i had to revamp my cooking plans and shopping list as i’m not used to starting the week on a friday, but i’m so glad i did.

i got all this and then some!

being on the wards sometimes means you have to let go of what a conventional ‘week’ means. yesterday was a condensed weekend, and today feels like monday (yes, i’m on call). i could be all bitter about it, but . . . why? i enjoyed my day off and i’m fresh and ready to tackle another call cycle. just 4 nights (and 2 weeks total) left of the rotation!

positive feedback loop
my attending (who i really like and respect a lot) called me into her office for feedback at the end of her 2-week stint. not every attending is good about doing this, but many are, and it’s always a little scary. i was really happy to find out that she felt like i was very enthusiastic and doing a great job running my team, and the one thing she specifically commented on was my positivity and lack of complaining!

she even brought up an incident where we had to accept a preemie for overnight monitoring after eye surgery — a situation that she knows residents tend to whine about, calling it ‘a dump’ since the patient is really an eye surgery patient. i remember accepting that patient without any protest — after all, it was a preemie and at an adjusted age of less than 40 weeks, the kid needed watching.

so even if i haven’t been 100% complaint free, it warms my heart that someone actually took notice of my efforts to be more positive. this is especially meaningful because there was at least one rotation in the past where i got criticized for being exactly the opposite. this definitely makes me want to keep up with my efforts to remain as complaint-free as possible, and — as hideously cheesy as it sounds — continue to bring perspective and mindfulness to work with me every day.

iPod refresher
i took advantage of some of my off-time to refill my nano with some fresh albums. i ended up choosing:

lost channels by great lake swimmers

fearless by taylor swift (thanks marathon maiden! i actually love her radio hits — such a guilty pleasure.)

recollections of memory by a shoreline dream

paste magazine compilation #53 from 6/09, from paste magazine, which is how i identified the above new artists (from the previous month’s sampler).

i am excited for my run today! i also threw a few old favorites (sigur ros and frou frou) into the mix, but i like to keep the number of albums on my nano low so that i can really get to know them over a few weeks of running.

7.17.09

workout: 8 miles, average pace 8:54/mi. it was early AM, so the temp was low 70s, but the humidity was 98%! i didn’t get around to yoga. i figure my massage worked out my muscles enough 🙂

doin’ time is back! i soooooo missed my own cooking. we had mini lamb-burgers stuffed into whole wheat pitas, served with homemade (easy) tzatziki and a medley of sauteed summer vegetables. after many takeout/restaurant meals in a row, this tasted so wholesome and fresh to me!

meat close-up (vegetarians, shield your eyes!)

my plate! i swear there is lamb in that pita somewhere.

amazing coincidence is that I made lamb burgers on pita and a freelance kick-a tsasiki before I looked at your blog this am. My secret ingredient is a lot of feta and cumin in the burger…what is the green stuff in the burger?

atilla: the green stuff is parsley.

marathon: YAY! let me know when you interview if you do. and if you have any questions about the curriculum, i can help out — i don&#39t know if i mentioned it, but i went here for med school as well as residency. sometimes i feel like i&#39ve been there forever!

cottchz: i&#39ll definitely check your site out! do you live near here?

susan: oh i LOVE lamb. it might actually be my favorite meat.
