work in progress
the mindfulness project is going . . . okay. on tuesday, i did a great job of keeping it together. i floated through pretty calmly considering how many noses i flushed and parents i reassured. yesterday, however, was borderline insanity. i kept seeing these runny-nosed, otherwise healthy children, and i was taking it as a personal insult that parents were bringing their kids in just because they had COLDS. but the thing is, thinking more about it, a voice of reason is talking me down. she’s saying:

■ these parents deserve credit for coming to the clinic rather than the ER
■ a lot of them are new parents and probably just wanted some reassurance
■ seeing kids with colds is a good chance to do some education, and maybe next time they’ll stay home
■ kids with simple problems like colds and ringworm are probably essential for keeping clinics financially afloat
■ i only have to do this for a week! suck it UP already.

obviously this voice is smarter and more mature than i am.

rioja therapyas mentioned in my last wisp-of-a-post, i headed out post-clinic for a much needed adult beverage and some good venting. a few people at work were talking about heading to piazza italia after work, and despite my normal lack of sponteneity it just sounded like an excellent idea. when i said this, they invited me along, but what i didn’t realize was that it was a birthday party for one of the first-year residents . . . one who recently shocked me just a little by informing me that she reads this (hi a!). i hope she was okay with me crashing because it was a really fun time.
the inside. we sat outside, though.

one of the coolest things was getting to hang out with the clinic’s 2 spanish interpreters. both of them are very nice, smart, and have accumulated enough pediatric knowledge through hanging out at so many visits that they could probably function as independently as clinicians (and more efficiently, too, without need for interpretation). it was interesting to hear what it is like to watch us all interact with our patients, and just how much everyone’s style varies.

we also had a very intellectual discussion about this video. you know, i identify with bon qui qui. sometimes i just want to yell “SECURITY!” too.

rain, rain
off to run and hopefully not get struck by lightning. OMG i hate thunderstorms!

5.6.09

workout:
tuesday: 5 miles outside @ 9:09/mi, 20 minutes gentle hatha yoga
wednesday: 40 minutes elliptical + 30 day shred, level 1. i’m sore today!

doin’ time: no — but i did have some delicious gnocchi and zabaglione gelato at piazza italia. their fairly traditional italian menu isn’t the most exciting to me, but the execution is solid. and the wine was great.

reading: i need to figure out a way to bribe myself to be better about this.

flossing/biting: good on both counts.
