bucking up as we speak

May 14, 2009

less than 100%
i’ve been trucking along all week, but thanks to my non-swine-flu same day clinic virus, i’m doing it with just half of my usual energy, motivation, and enthusiasm. my 4 mile run yesterday left me exhausted and dripping with sweat despite the fact that it was 50 degrees outside, and our fridge is completely devoid of anything fresh because i have not been able to drag myself to the grocery store since last monday. not that i really care much, because everything tastes kind of flat and weird and i’m not my typical hearty-eating self anyway.

i know: i’ll survive, and i should stop whining about it (“buck up, little camper!” . . . right?). but let me just say that this BETTER be entirely resolved before we get to napa, because i have some serious wine tasting (and biking, and eating, and exploring, and running, and . . . ) to do. i can’t believe our trip is only a few days away!!

zoe’s granola
the nice people from zoefoods were kind enough to send me a sampling of their bars and granolas to try. i have to say that it is SO much fun to get a package of free food in the mail! especially samplers with all different sort of varieties to try. even though my cabinet is now overflowing with granola and i still have many pure bars left from a previous bestowing of snacks-by-mail, i welcome anyone who wants to send me free stuff to go right ahead and do so.
variety pack from zoe’s foods: honey almond, cranberry currant, and cinnamon raisin granolas + 4 bar varieties

i went ahead and tasted the honey oat granola last night — fine, actually i had it as part of a rather unbalanced but delicious dinner. even though my taste IS impaired, i think it went very nicely with some plain yogurt. i really liked the fact that it wasn’t greasy or heavy like some granolas can be, and there were plenty of almond slices in the mix.

for granola, the nutritional information for this variety is quite good! each 3/4 cup serving (not like i measured it out, if you’re into that, go for it) contains:

✔ 190 calories (much less dense than some granolas)
✔ 5 g fat, with only 0.5 g saturated and 0 trans
✔ 8 g fiber (impressive!)
✔ 8 g of protein

this combination seems like it would be great for satiety and lasting fuel, so the granola would make a great healthy 2 AM on-call snack mixed with some yogurt or milk. next month i’ll test out that theory.

today
may be the first day of the rest of my life, but i really hope it’s the last day of feeling like #($*#. off to renal!

5.13.09

workout: 4 miles @ 9:06/mi that were way, WAY harder than 4 miles should ever be

reading: i read an article on cerebral salt wasting, as my renal attending assigned it to me. homework, i guess! i kind of like being told what to do sometimes.

flossing: yes, thanks to josh who bought more floss because he read on the blog (while he was at work) that i ran out!! also, the nails are looking almost manicure-worthy. i think i might get one this weekend (plus a pedi) so i can have pretty fingers and toes in CA . . .

Sorry you’re still feeling badly. I just now have a normal feeling throat. Down that water and let your kidneys take care of it! You’ll feel better by Napa, I just know it!

Wow, that’s really low in calories for granola!

    Hope you feel better soon.

    Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the review of the Honey Almond Granola! It’s my favorite. You’re right, the granola is formulated to give long-term fullness from both the protein and fiber, and I definitely notice it myself. No snacks between meals anymore! I pair the granola with greek yogurt (super high in protein) and fresh fruit, and I swear by this. Get well soon and have a great trip!
