pure fun

surprise!
look what greeted me in my mailbox yesterday!
this site isn’t strictly a food, health/fitness, medical or running blog. in fact, according to BlogHer it lands in the nebulous catch-all life blog category, the ‘misc.’ section of the blogosphere (did i really just use that word? omg). but just because i lack focus doesn’t mean i don’t want in on some of the fun! i’ve been tantalized by all of the delicious giveaways and samplers seen on some of my favorite sites, so i decided to get in on the action.

i am not about to pretend that someone at PureBar stumbled upon lostandallalone and decided that i needed to spread the word about their raw & organic bars. who would believe me, anyway? instead, i’ll be upfront and admit that i emailed and asked for them in a nice, pleading email — and was surprised and thrilled to receive this box in the mail!

so how are they? well, i don’t know yet. to be honest, i really haven’t been eating bars very often on this rotation, because i have time to prepare and eat more complicated snacks (yogurt & fruit, carrots, & hummus, etc) that i don’t get to enjoy on my busier months. however: i have plenty of hectic times up ahead (june & july) so there will be many bar opportunities. i will be sure to report on each flavor as i try it!

in addition to this surprise, there will be another healthy snack food making an appearance soon, and even . . . (drumroll, please) my very first giveaway. who would have thought this site would go from whining about my away pediatrics rotation in 2004 (that’s how the depressing ‘lostandallalone’ name came to be, by the way) to granola bar giveaways nearly 5 years later?

as a side note, looking at that post is quite amusing because i mentioned endocrinology even then, although i really wasn’t being serious. i guess even though some things have changed, much has remained the same.

friday! running & more
it’s a bit of an anticlimactic friday, since i have to work this weekend. i am NOT complaining, though — this month has been fabulous and i actually feel oddly RELIEVED to be covering shifts in the full-term nursery so that i can at least feel like i’m paying my dues in some way! (yes, i know that is a little bit bizarre). also, i have a half-day today and a very light week coming up, so the timing is ideal.

i had to force myself not to run this morning. for the first time, i have really gotten into outdoor AM running. i think my love affair with the treadmill is finally coming to an end — while i will still use it if i have to, i am really relishing the cool, cleansing morning runs, rolling hills and all. my tune is likely to change dramatically when the temps start rising and “cool” is taken out of the equation (and replaced with sweaty, southern, mid-july air that is more akin to soup), but right now it is delightful.

because of my hip, though, i know i need to stick with half running, half cross-training for now. i am planning on a 10-11 mile run tomorrow (i only have to work half of saturday, as opposed to sunday which is a 12 hour shift) and i know it will be smarter to save myself for this effort. assuming it goes well, it is GAME ON for the half in charlottesville — although again my plan is to run and savor this course, rather than racing it. and unlike some people who say things like that and proceed to win the entire thing, i think i will be able to hold back.

oh, and D10 had asked whether i was planning on running the marathon on may 2nd in NC — and the answer is absolutely not. i can just imagine how i’d feel at mile 20 when i haven’t gone over 14 for many months! however, i think i will go and run the half, as long as things go okay in charlottesville! josh and i already have a hotel room booked, so we were going to make a fun little trip out of it.

happy easter weekend to those who are celebrating!

and of course, a passover shout-out as well:

while a holiday that eschews bread is no friend of mine, i do enjoy a fluffy matzo ball now and then.

4.9.09

workout: 5.13 miles at average 8:29/mi (i was feeling speedy . . . or at least speedy for me) on the hills of CH. it was lovely and made me happy for the whole rest of the day. i also did 20 minutes of yoga zone’s yoga for flexibility, which is more of a stretching routine than traditional yoga. it felt good.

reading: 45 minutes of pediatric dentistry modules. i’m not going to lie: teeth are boring. i fell asleep reading this stuff.

flossing: yes.

I haven’t tried Pure bars either.

Good luck on your run tomorrow! And may you be a more careful runner than that girl in the link. 😉
