married white female

April 7, 2009

in search of female of any race, aged 22 – 35, for running partner/friendship. looking for someone who loves gourmet cuisine, running and talking about both, but isn’t all that fast (8:30 – 9:30 pace optimal for long runs). must not think i am a giant loser for having a blog. nerdy profession (science, medicine, tech) is a bonus. must prefer discussing desperate housewives to the NCAA tournament. no republicans need apply.

heh.
kidding.
sort of.

for the most part, yesterday was lovely. i was way productive and managed a great 6 mile run in my new kicks. however, i was a little sad midafternoon when i received a phone call canceling the running date i had been looking forward to. here’s the thing: i’m thrilled that i have all of this time on my hands. but i’m an extrovert, and all this quiet peaceful stillness is starting to rub me the wrong way. i need a social outlet.

i guess what i’m saying is that i’m feeling lonely.

when you work 80 hours per week, there is no time for lonely. you pretty much only think about SLEEP on your time off, and there is so much human interaction at work (not always good interaction, but still) that silence post-call is the best gift imaginable. but now? i am really feeling the fact that many of my closest friends have moved away, and i haven’t really found (for lack of a better word) replacements.

the most recent and devastating loss was the departure of the wonderful s (hi, s, if you’re reading!), running partner/science nerd extraordinaire. we literally lived across the street from one another, and even though sometimes my schedule led to long stretches of anti-socialness, it was easy to sneak in drinks or dinner now and then. several months before she left (and before her gestation became too much of an issue), she finally convinced me to start going on some morning runs with her, and it was fantastic.

now, she’s blogging (or at least her husband is), pregnant, and — most unfortunately — in california. i again have time on my hands and a hip healthy enough to tolerate some AM runs, but . . . i have no one to go with. i don’t really have anyone to grab a drink with after work, and while there are a few couples josh and i really love meeting for dinners out and such, it just doesn’t happen as often as i would like. part of it is that coodinating the schedule of 3-4 residents is close to impossible, and the other part is that josh has been working so hard lately that i don’t think he would have the energy to do anything even if we did make plans.

so yeah. i hope this doesn’t come off as too pathetic, but i’m in the market for some friends. i may start going to one of the local running clubs (that’s where i met s 4 years ago!) or making more conversation at the gym. in just a couple of months i will be super-busy again and this will be less of an issue, but it would be great to find someone to run with and do other fun things with over the next 4 years.

workout: 6.2 miles, average 8:54/mi. i was only going to do 5 but decided to power up a big hill to finish off the run in preparation for charlottesville! despite my aforementioned loneliness, it was a good run.

shoe report: i liked the feel of the new asics. they were bouncy and cushy. they felt ‘mushier’ than my brooks glycerins, which is neither a positive or negative — it was as if i could feel the road better and as a result could respond to it a bit more. they are also lighter, but did feel a bit less supportive.

my car analogy is that the brooks glycerins are a VW passat (my mom’s car) and the asics a VW golf (my car). [i’m sure there are non-VW-vehicles that would make this analogy work, but this is just based on what i’ve driven!] only time will tell which i will prefer in the long run (pun intended) . . . but i’m happy with my purchase.

doin’ time: last night’s creation was martha’s tortilla soup. it was kind of fun, as you basically made a very bare-bones base of chicken broth, shredded chicken, and jalopeno, and then piled everything else on top. my only complaint is that we used up almost all of the ‘sides’ and still have a ton of chicken/broth. to be fair, i don’t know whether this is due to the recipe’s proportions or the fact that josh had a field day inhaling the homemade chips and avocado. either way, i’m going to have to find something else to do with all the leftover chicken & broth. ideas?

We should def meet-up with or without the hubs, I got you covered in all areas except running…

I’m never quite sure when your free with your work schedule so let me know (i’m thinking of seeing The Color Purple in May at Durham Perf Arts Ctr, plus Farm Mkt rule, and you could show me cool foodie places in Chapel Hill/Carrborro).

I felt just like this when I moved back home after college. I was in the marching band in college (woo!), so basically I had at least 30 people (up to 250!) who weren’t necessarily my closest friends, but there was always someone to do something with. I had no clue what to do when I got home and had only really kept in touch with two friends from high school who stuck around. I browsed craigslist and considered posting an ad for myself…probably wouldn’t have been a terrible idea, some people are looking for running buddies!

I fit that description! Too bad I am far away! Your dinner looks great, I need to try it out..making soups seem intimidating to me for whatever reason.

Can’t run that fast or that far, but I otherwise fit the description– do the facts that we’re already friends and I live in Maine put me out of the running?

I feel you on the need for more friends. Working in health care can be very isolating– either you work LONG hours or odd hours or both, and no one want to hear you talk about work!

But seriously, Eric and I have been batting around the idea of moving south– make your pitch!

I’d totally be up for some running and dinners out! Two of my favorite things…I’d even try to Shred with you.
I have some vacancies in the friendship department too…
BUT I live in Canada so that’s probably not going to work out so much.
Plus, I’m not a doctor so I’d be one of those annoying people always asking you to check stuff out. “Do my glands look swollen to you?” LOL

Most of my friends have moved as well, but lucky me, I’m an introvert so only go crazy sometimes. I like running by myself, but need people to sit and drink a beer with now and then, you know? Drinking by myself is just sad. 😉

🙁 sarah – i wish i could fly out immediately and go for a run and margaritas (virgin for me) with you.. you would find this funny – i read in our local campus newspaper about this one new faculty member who likes to run – i bombarded her in the bathroom (where i spend an awful lot of time lately!)and tried to convince her to run a half 8 months to a year after june 3 and train with me.. i think she was a little shocked.. no one will match you though – we’ll just have to have destination races and trips to sonoma in our future..

    “no republicans need apply”

    offensive, don’t you think?

i had enjoyed your blog, but that comment is just rude and incredibly judgmental.

i won’t make the same assumption that liberals aren’t worth my time just because you are judgmental.

i commented awhile ago when you made a de-lurking request–i’m currently doing a pre-med post-bac. i just moved to a new place (on the west coast, otherwise i’d suggest we meet for a run!), and i completely understand your feeling of lacking in the nearby friends department. i’m in the same boat! i realize as i type that i don’t have any brilliant friend-making suggestions. i read your post, though, and said, “me too!”
