cozy

March 14, 2009

good morning! we’ve got dreary, cold weather this weekend, but i’ve decided this is just extra motivation to spend the time relaxing at home, watching movies, and generally feeling cozy. josh has already glued himself to his (barbaric, scary, ethically questionable) video game and while i am going to encourage him to not spend his entire weekend on this, i’m letting him enjoy it for now.

plans for the day
☑ 10 AM spin class
yogadownload‘s 20 minute yoga for runners
☑ laundry & cleaning
☑ 30 minutes reading for work
☑ more murakami
☑ find some new music and refill iPod
☑ watch vicky christina barcelona
☑ out to somewhere in durham for dinner? tonali and blu seafood and bar are two places we’ve been wanting to try.

a lovely weekend day.

weighty stuff, part deux
in this post i complained about marathon training weight gain, a phenomenon i have noticed (and been frustrated by) in the past as well. not soon after, i reinjured myself and have been resting/cross-training only. it’s been 3 weeks since i’ve done an actual long run. the result? i have been noticeably less hungry, but have not really made any concerted effort to change my diet. and interestingly, true to past experiences, i’m back to (what i consider) normal and my clothes fit nicely again. loss of muscle? glycogen? fluid? fat? who knows, but i can definitely tell a difference.

i am sure jillian would like me to credit her shred but i’ve only done it twice. sorry!

workout: 45 minutes on the elliptical (average HR 173), levels 9 – 12, 5.4 ‘miles’ covered + 30 day shred, level 1. still painful and hard, especially on the legs during the lunges and squats!

doin’ time: i considered cooking, but between catching up on desperate housewives and grey’s (which is horrendously bad these days but somehow i just can’t stop watching) i couldn’t peel myself off of the couch to do so. we went out to our local pizza joint (loop) and i drank a glass of merlot, had a delicious salad with tomatoes (both regular AND sun-dried), walnuts, and gorgonzola, and enjoyed some pizza bianco (ricotta, mozz, and spinach on a white pizza). yum. i should have taken pictures to capture this perfect friday night meal, but i didn’t!

reading: 30 PREP questions done during downtime between meetings, plus some progress on my required QI (quality improvement) project. i’ll call that sufficient.

    Sarah,

I always gain weight when I’m training for a marathon (not a lot probably 2 pounds) but my clothes fit much better. What do you think? I’ve always thought it was from building muscle.

I hope you are enjoying your cozy weekend!

Is your working heart rate lower when you spin or ET than when you run? I found that I felt like I had to work SO much harder to maintain a high HR when spinning as compared to running. Is it the same for you? Maybe because its different muscles, I don’t know.

anon: as i mentioned, my clothes are definitely fitting better now compared to when training. i guess the muscle took up some room in there too (esp in the butt and thighs — and mine are not tiny to start with!). i do think my gain is a combo of muscle, fluid, glycogen, and also some (not much, but some) fat. my gain was more like 3-4 lbs.

jennyN: actually i haven’t ever worn a HRM running! i hope it’s not that much higher because i’m already pretty high doing the spinning/running things. i sweat and push pretty hard when i spin/elliptical and i feel like it’s really hard since my muscles aren’t used to it — running feels much easier! the spin class i just went to i had an average HR 177 and max 189, which is pretty high. i’ll definitely try putting the HRM back on when i start some running again next week — it will be interesting to compare.

I have found the weight gain with training interesting as well. I don’t know if it is b/c I feel like I am allowed to eat a lot more b/c of the training and it is more than I think…I’m glad I am not the only one!

thanks for the comment today it was reassuring that I won’t balloon up! 🙂 I do wonder if some of the weight loss is leg muscle that we don’t need when not running those long distances..who knows!
