the PICU calls . . .

January 19, 2009

i don’t get it — is the weekend really over already? as in, i’m already on call again? the past 2 days whizzed by in a blur of rest, relaxation, and some productivity, but i am in no way ready to go back to work.

le sigh.

the good news: there are only 2 call nights left in this PICU rotation, and i’ll be done with it ALL by saturday AM at noon! and unlike last time, i think i’ve done a great job at maintaining a positive focus, keeping up with the rest of life (running, cooking, reading, and the like), and generally not letting the crazy hours and high acuity drive me batty. once it’s over, there will be no more 4:15 AM wakeup calls for me, possibly EVER, because this may be my last intensive care unit month! that puts it all in perspective and kind of makes the whole thing more bearable.

i feel like i have learned a lot with the ICU experiences that i’ve had, and i know i will never forget the times spent with sick cardiac babies and accident victims. i now ‘get’ ventilators, have a decent grip on which pressor does what, and can go off on a long tangent about the merits of fentanyl & midaz vs. ketamine & precedex.

so will i miss it?

um, no.

some pix from the weekend:

my delicious egg & pancetta panini @ vivace

oh, and shopping was a success! josh came home with an updated shirt wardrobe and 3 new ties. now he will be the most stylin’ surgery resident in the hospital. mcdreamy, watch out.

workout: ok i will admit it — i wimped out and did my long run on the treadmill! it just didn’t seem to want to stop raining, and the combo of wet + cold was just too much for me to deal with. my plan called for hills, so i just built some fake ones into my treadmill workout!

total distance = 10 miles
speed = 8:57/mi
incline = 0.5% with 4 2.5% hills of varying length (3-5 minutes — based on song length on my iPod!)

i also did 20 minutes of relaxing stretchy yoga.

weekly workout totals for marathon training week #1: 33.3 miles run + 45 minutes elliptical + 2 20-minute weights sessions + 1 20 minute yoga. i’ll take it!

doin’ time: OH. MY. GOSH. this was my favorite martha recipe thus far! before and while making it, i was skeptical on multiple accounts: about the use of pumpkin, the thin-ness and volume of the sauce, and the choice of corn vs. flour tortillas. but it turned out fantastic — a savory, spicy, cheesy creation that truly hit the spot post-long run. recipe is on my sidebar, along with the rest of this week’s planned dinners. i highly recommend trying it out!

reading: 15 minutes of cases from this month’s peds in review. one on cervical myelomeningocoele, one on HSP, and one on DIC.

flossing: but of course.

I haven’t run that far on a treadmill in probably 5 years. It’s awful. Kudos for getting it done.
