rest for the weary

good morning!
after 10 hours of refreshing sleep, i feel good today! i must say that getting one day off a week = 10 jillion times better than working 12 days in a row only to collapse in a heap for the next 2! while my current rotation is rather grueling hours-wise, due to 80-hour regulations there are a couple of perks that come with my position. these are:

• getting to leave early on fridays! i left at 1:30 yesterday, but really it’s supposed to be right after rounds, at about noon.
• having saturday off every week.

with these extras, i will come in at exactly 79.25 hours for this past week! just under the wire, but really, it does make a difference.

ALSO: i just realized i will get to sleep an extra hour tonight before call. SCORE! as an aside, i remember that when i was on my OB/GYN rotation in medical school, i made the very sad mistake of ‘springing forward’ instead of ‘falling back’ on the morning of the time change. meaning, i arrived to start rounding at 3:00 AM instead of 5! that was awesome.

plans for today
☑ 10 mile race-simulation run outside (going to leave as soon as i write this post!)
☑ 20-minute upper body weights session
☑ pay billzzzz
☑ plan for next week: running/workout schedule, dinners, shopping list
☑ read 1 NICU-related article
☑ cleaning: laundry + quick bathroom once-over
☑ errands: tailor to pick up pants (yay!!), bank, dry cleaner, post office, groceries
☑ catch up on grey’s anatomy
☑ make butternut squash pasta dish

seriously, my life is so glamorous i don’t know what to do with myself.

VOTE!
today is the last day for early voting in NC! i voted yesterday and it was pretty exciting for me, because this was the first time ever i didn’t vote by mail with an absentee ballot. i only had to wait in line 10 minutes, and that was at peak post-work time of 5:45 pm.

workout: i had a much better experience with my interval run than i did attempting to do it post-call. it was a hard workout, though! definitely felt like good training. all on the TM @ 0.5% incline, reading marie claire. i like this magazine specifically because one of my friends from high school is on the staff and often has articles and/or is pictured in the mag. the november issue had her participating in a book club and there was also an article she wrote about her experiences with finances. so that was cool! anyway, my run:
– 1 mile warmup @ 9:06/mi
– 2 miles @ 7:53/mi, followed by a 5-minute recovery jog
– 2 x 1 miles @ 7:41/mi, each followed by 3-minute recovery jogs
– 2 x 800m @ 7:30mi, each followed by 3 minute recoveries.

cooking: i made an amaaaaaaazing sandwich for lunch involving pumpkin butter, smoked turkey, spinach, and goat cheese. try it, you’ll like it!

NICU triumph and word-of-the-day: i placed a UVC yesterday! UVC stands for umbilical venous catheter. believe it or not, you can get an IV line in a neonate just by sticking a piece of tubing through their belly button, basically! there are veins and arteries there that still connect to the systemic circulation, and accessing them is great for giving medicines, sampling blood, or monitoring arterial pressures. it’s actually not too hard, but it can be difficult if your baby is super-tiny. my patient was about 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs), so not super-small by NICU standards.
