NICUnotes

October 28, 2008

i hate to admit it, but i’m already tired. and i haven’t even been on call yet! it just seems like there are not enough hours in the day for me to do everything that i want to do. and it’s not like i have a set of ridiculously heroic aspirations, either! specifically, i would like time in my day to:

♥ blog while drinking coffee
♥ go to work
♥ run/work out
♥ make dinner
♥ do some academic reading
♥ read something fun for 15 minutes
♥ exchange more than 5 words with my husband

i did all of the above yesterday (except the last one, because he didn’t get out of work until 9:30), and only managed to sneak in 6 hours and 40 minutes of sleep. that might be great for some people (and OH how i am jealous of those people!) but it does not work for nearly-narcoleptic me.

such is life, though. and i keep having to remind myself that it’s only for 28 days (27 now!) and will be followed by a week of much-deserved R&R. plus, i will get a day off every week to attempt to repay the accumulated sleep debt.

yesterday went pretty well, by the way. i didn’t feel rushed and i spent the day learning the details of my 7 NICU patients. given my PICU experience, i will admit i put extra effort into sounding as nice and patient as possible. i don’t want anyone thinking i’m mean/intimidating ever again! the NICU nurses are very nice, though, which makes it easier (and more natural, not like i’m play-acting all sweetness and light when i really want to ram a bottle of pregestimil* down someone’s throat).

* NICU word of the day is pregestimil. definition: nasty-tasting, halfway-chemically-digested formula used in some preemies or other babies with milk-protein intolerance (although actually most of our babies are on maternal or donor breast milk these days!)

workout: 40 minutes elliptical intervals + 20 minutes weights. i was super-hungry for some reason and not feeling super-strong!
– regular push-ups, 2 x 10
– plie squats with 12 lb weight, 2 x 12
– bicep curls on bosu ball with 12 lb, 2 x 10
– double lunges with 8 lb weights, 2 x 12
– tricep kickbacks with 5 lb weight, 2 x 12
– seated row with 40 lbs, 2 x 12

cooking: i made rachael ray’s sweet potato chicken curry-in-a-hurry, which i found at the unofficial but fun ‘everything rachael ray’ blog (click the recipe link to view). though the name makes me want to barf, the dinner did not! it was easy and delicious — i love anything with sweet potatoes. i applaud rachael ray here for her use of cream without being ridiculous — 1/2 cup in a biiiiiiiig mixture adds a nice decadence without being horrendously unhealthy (like some of her rcipes!).

reading: a neoreviews article on NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis). we’ll save that definition for a future post as NICU-word-of-the-day!

The nice thing about the Rachel Ray recipes is that most of the time you can make them healthy by just reducing her HUGE amounts of oil.
