as seen on tv

October 12, 2008

i have to admit that all i know about funerals has been obtained from tv, especially six feet under. i know they are for the living, and in my mind, i see the process as just a block of time specifically dedicated to thinking about and appreciating someone for what they brought to the world during their lifespan. in my case, i remember my grandfather most for:

– his enthusiasm as audience member when i would (be forced to) do mini-recitals on the piano as a child
– his love for my grandmother, and pride of their children and strong family ties. i still remember their 50th anniversary well (and how again, i was forced to play the piano! it was a recurring theme of my childhood . . .)
– giving a beautiful, touching speech at our wedding

i am sure many more such scenes will come to mind today, and i hope we will spend some time today sharing these things.

I am sorry to hear about your grandfather. It sounds like he led a good life. I hope you and your family are doing okay.
