magic

July 22, 2008

i have to attest to the magic of cardio workouts. whether it’s a 10 mile run or just a jaunt on the elliptical, it is amazing to me how headache-y fatigue can turn to relaxed calm with a little energy investment. i really didn’t want to go to the gym yesterday — in fact, all i wanted to do was crash upon arrival to my apartment at 6 pm. lackluster sleep and the stress over my presentation (not to mention the weekend’s events) had just built up and i felt like a less-than-hot mess.

but i knew i would feel better after getting rid of a liter or so of sweat. and so i dragged my butt to the gym, got on the elliptical for 45 minutes, and by the time i finished i was transformed into a far happier, more energetic version of me. i managed to get my grocery shopping done as well and came home and made dinner. while it is true we didn’t eat until almost 9 pm, it was worth it.

whatever cardio does to my hormonal/brain chemistry balance, i heart it. i don’t know how so many people go without!

workout: 45 minutes intervals on the elliptical.

reading: i spent time practicing my presentation and tying up the loose ends in the AM. i think that counts.

cooking: i have decided the theme for the week is . . . cooking without a recipe. this is because due to lack of weekend planning time, i had to create my shopping list during some downtime in pulmonary clinic (don’t worry, i looked appropriately studious and i don’t think anyone realized what i was writing). planning things out without a slew of recipes in front of me was actually rather freeing. i have at least a modest repertoire of decent dinners i can just throw together without direction, and i’m never going to put an ingredient i don’t really like in them! last night i made a greek salad with some canned (but wild & alaskan) salmon on top. it also contained romaine (on the bottom), tomato, cucumber, peppers, olives, feta, and chick peas, and we had some pita chips on the side. i dressed it with some annie’s goddess dressing which is not super healthy but which is my new obsession. the whole thing was good and exactly what i was craving.

The salad looks good. Keep posting your dinners. I am in need of some new recipes!
